The Christmas story has a dark chapter to it.

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men.

Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

“A voice was heard in Ramah,

wailing and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be consoled,

because they are no more.”

(Matthew 2;16-18)

Why bring this downer up on Christmas?

Because it makes the season real.

Because it reminds us that darkness doesn’t politely take a holiday.

That forces bigger than you and me in business, life, and history will still be there in 2026.

…And 2027.

…And beyond.

But so will the light.

After all, Herod failed while the child lived.

Two thousand years later, Herod is dust and bones in some forgotten corner of the earth while that baby is still shaping the world.

So today, let’s not focus on the noise or the battles ahead.

Let’s focus instead on gratitude.

Thank you for those of you who read my notes and those of you who felt free to disagree and who challenged me when I drifted.

Thank you, for the conversations, the encouragement, the sharp feedback, and the unexpected friendships that came out of this year.

Most of all, I thank God as I sit with my wife and daughters, watching them unwrap another Christmas together as a family.

Life is hard.

The world is messy.

But it is also deeply, unbelievably beautiful.
