Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
(Matthew 22:34-40)
Two Principles on which an entire religion rested upon.
Like a north star, knowing these principles could help someone manage their day to day existence confident that they would know the right actions to take.
But in owning a business?
“A successful business owner can never take a holiday. They must work all the time.”
That was shared with me yesterday by a woman who had once a successful fashion business in Russia before the war and which eventually closed.
I told her that’s not true.
She looked at me like an alien.
“No you have to work hard to be successful. It’s a principle.”
I shook my head.
“Yes you can’t be lazy” I replied, “but working hard does not guarantee success. There are a lot of hard working business failures out there..”
Now she was aggressively shaking her head
“No. You’re wrong…”
So I said this:
“You can own a profitable, successful business and live the life you want, but only if your business follows a different principle.”
She paused.
“What principle?”
This one:
You don’t build a business that demands all your heart, your soul and your mind.
You build a business that over time does not need you at all to run day-to-day.
When your business becomes attractive enough to sell, you now own something that can fund your life today and your future tomorrow.
A business that empowers you… instead of consuming you.
A business where you can take a holiday…if you so wish.
That is the core of what I teach inside Fall in Love with Your Business Again which launches on Valentine’s Day.
