During the Cold War the Soviets had a weapon more effective than any missile in their arsenal.
It wasn’t nuclear. It wasn’t technological.
It was a beautiful woman in a grocery store.
The Americans had a strict policy for anyone working in their embassies across Warsaw Pact countries. No fraternising with locals…
no girlfriends …
no buddies.
Nobody from that country, period.
But then they sent nineteen-year-old Marines to guard the building.
Hormone-raging, lonely young men thousands of miles from home who hadn’t spoken to anyone outside the embassy walls in weeks.
And one afternoon at the grocery store or the bank or the park, a stunning woman would appear.
Friendly, warm and interested in him.
This kid from small-town America suddenly has the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen laughing at his jokes and touching his arm.
What’s the harm in a coffee?
So they grab a coffee. Then a second. Then lunch. Then dinner and drinks. Then the invitation back to hers.
And he find himself in her bed scarcely believing his luck.
“This is life after highschool” he says to himself… wow..”
Right then the door flies open and he is blinded by flashing lights.
Men with cameras pouring in.
Flashes going off.
And then one of them sits down on the edge of the bed next to this terrified kid and explains how the rest of his life is about to go.
Cooperate or these photographs land on your security chief’s desk tomorrow morning and you’ll be on the first plane home in disgrace and under arrest.
This patriotic nineteen-year-old who never intended to betray his country just became a spy. Fully under the control of the KGB.
Not because he was disloyal.
Because he was vulnerable and they knew how to profit off his vulnerability.
He thought he’d found something real.
What he found was a trap.
And the Soviets? They knew exactly how this worked because they made sure it could never happen to them. Their own embassy guards were married with their families living with them in the country.
They understood the vulnerability. They just made sure it was the other side that paid for it.
