Before leaving for RAK with the family, I sat down and made sure three different client milestones were completed and delivered, so that nothing left hanging would pull me back to my laptop, at the wrong moment.

Then I drove to RAK and met up with the family who got there the night before.

Threw the girls around the pool until my arms gave out. Watched them scream and laugh and demand one more throw knowing full well I’d already said “last one” four times. Sat with my wife that evening at the hotel pub outdoors under blankets with a bottle of wine while the kids ran around.

My phone was there. I didn’t touch it.

Not because I’m disciplined. Because there was nothing to touch. The work was done. The clients were taken care of. The next thing on my calendar was two days away.

I planned for that. Specifically and deliberately.

Now I’m a freelancer. I built my schedule around the ability to do this. But the business owners I advise who have built truly independent companies take it so much further.

During the war against Iran some of them managed their businesses for weeks from overseas.

Different countries with different time zones.

It didn’t matter.

Their companies didn’t skip a beat because the systems, the teams, and the structures were already in place long before the missiles started flying.

They didn’t scramble to make it work because they’d already built it that way.

That’s the difference between a business that gives you freedom and a business that holds you hostage.

One requires you to plan around it…

The other requires you to build it once and then live with the freedom it provides, whenever you choose.

Module 2 of Fall in Love with Your Business Again covers the growth levers that make this possible.

It’s not about working harder.

It’s about investing smarter in your own business so that it generates results whether you’re at your desk or under a blanket in RAK with a glass of Rose.

The next cohort call is Monday 27 April where we dig into Module 2 and anything else on your mind.

George Sotiropoulos describes planning a short family break to Ras Al Khaimah by completing client milestones in advance, and contrasts his experience as a freelancer with business owner clients who managed their companies remotely for weeks during the Iran conflict. This illustrates the owner freedom principles covered in Module 2 of End Burnout — Fall in Love with Your Business Again.
