Have you ever received an unsolicited email from a “marketing” company? It’s funny when you think about it. How is this supposed to be an effective way to get customers and show that you know what you’re doing? I don’t want my name associated with these guys if they’re going to solicit business like that.
First of all, these types of emails are often poorly written. Typos, grammar mistakes, and awkward phrasing are all too common. It’s like they didn’t even bother to proofread before hitting “send”.
Or learn proper English before targeting native English speakers.
Secondly, they’re often impersonal or impractical. The email will probably start with something like “Dear Friend” or make a bogus claim like “Your website content is amazing!”, which you know is BS because, let’s be honest, your website content is probably nowhere near amazing…
It’s amateur marketing and just screams “I don’t care who you are, I just want your money”. It’s not exactly the best way to build rapport with potential customers.
Thirdly, they’re often irrelevant. Have you ever received an email promoting a product or service that you have absolutely no interest in? It’s a waste of everyone’s time. And yet, they think that blasting out emails to a massive list of random people is a viable marketing strategy.
Finally, they’re plain annoying. You’re going about your day, trying to get work done, and then ding – another clown pops into your inbox.
So, what’s the solution? When selling, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. The wrong way is to send out mass emails with poor grammar, impersonal greetings, and irrelevant content. The right way is to research and understand your audience, take time to personalise your outreach, and create a Corleone offer – one the right audience can’t’ refuse.
At the end of the day, it’s all about building relationships. You want potential customers to like you, trust you and believe that you have their best interests at heart. So, if you’re not willing to put in the time and effort to be a professional, than don’t be surprised how much the door hurts when it hits you on the way out.
To your success and sanity.
