That’s my (somewhat cheesy) adaptation of “Against the Wind” by Bob Seger — for the 7-figure business owners who’ve given it their all…
And now have to reckon with one uncomfortable question:
Was it worth it?
Do you know what I’m talking about?
Marty does.
He’s in his 70s. Built a business that supported his family for decades across multiple countries.
He’s ready to step back.
His business isn’t ready for him to.
His children want nothing to do with the company.
They have their own lives…
Marty has investments but his retirement plan is the successful sale of his company.
Which means he is not running against the wind….
He’s running into a hurricane
The reality is that 7 out of 10 owners looking to sell a business fail to find an offer.
“George I’m tired.. I’m in my 70s.. I want to live my life..”
It showed…the numbers had fallen off in the last couple of years.
A wrong way trend that has reset the timer on his exit…
Extending it by a good 5 years if he hopes to get anywhere close to his goal.
And he has to dig.. and dig hard to find the energy to turn things around and make the business an attractive asset someone will pay his price to acquire.
“Wish I didn’t know now…. What I didn’t know then…”
Against the Wind is a beautiful song.
But it’s hell when it becomes the theme of your business exit.
