After my post of Sophia on a horse, I received the following email.
Hi George,
I went to that polo club on Monday.
My daughter Samantha rides a horse there with her favourite riding helmet which is slightly too big for her head.
She grabs the reins like she’d been doing this her whole life.
But the best is when she regularly looks back over her shoulder to check that I’m watching.
And I am…always.
Big win.
And my phone then? In my pocket…forgotten.
No client emails pulling me away. No Slack messages. No “quick call” that turns into forty minutes of someone else’s emergency. No mental arithmetic on whether I could afford to be away from the desk for a whole afternoon.
Just a kid on a horse and a dad watching her figure out how to do it better every time.
I didn’t earn that afternoon by working harder. I earned it by doing those things you keep talking about every day.
Building a business that doesn’t need me in the room to function. A business where my team handles the day to day and I choose where and with whom I spend my time.
That’s not retirement. That’s not “made it.” That’s a Tuesday.
Most business owners I talk to can’t do this. They’d be at the polo club with their body while their brain is running through tomorrow’s problems. They’d check the phone and hope the kid isn’t looking. They’d leave early because something “came up” that only they could handle.
And the worst part is they’d tell themselves it’s temporary. That one day they’ll be present.
You know…when things calm down.
When the business is in better shape.
When they’ve hired the right person.
But that day doesn’t arrive on its own.
And if they don’t build it.. it never will.
So keep it up. What you’re talking about is too important to keep holding off for another day.
