We woke up early our first day in London.
“Let’s go show the kids the Christmas Decorations in Harrod’s windows.” I proposed.
They would love them.
I remember how amazing they were over the years when I lived in London and would walk past Harrod’s back and forth on the way to work.
We bundled up and 10 minutes later we were at Harrods
It was bland
Boring
With only some ugly yellow lights around the windows.
There were displays alright.. but they were for luxury brands and pretty much what you would show in July.
Nothing to do with Christmas.
No festive spirt at all
Just a preacher making fables about Jesus that had nothing to do with the Christmas story or any aspect of the religion.
As far as I could tell the Jesus he was shouting about… was the Jesus that did the landscaping at my parent’s house in Illinois.
“let’s get out of here” I said to my wife.
We ended up at Selfridgres on Oxford Street.
There the windows had amazing Disney themed displays with a Christmas December feel.
And the doors had pictures of Jesus and Merry Christmas displayed.
It was authentic…. It was real….
And we ended up shopping there instead of Harrods, even thought Harrods was close to the house.
Why?
Because people don’t spend time or money where it feels soulless.
They don’t reward indifference.
They don’t come back to places that look like they were designed by committee.
You can charge premium prices.
But only if you give people a reason to care.
That’s not a retail lesson.
That’s a business lesson.
You don’t win by being the biggest name or the closest option.
You win by creating an experience people actually want to be part of.
Take from that what you will.
