When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
- Mark 2:17
I’ll start with a shout out to Ben Settle who pointed out this passage and the critical business lesson that is in there.
You see many entrepreneurs (and I’m guilty of this) spend a great deal of time, money and effort on trying to sell solutions to people who don’t need or want them.
In a sense they are trying to heal the healthy.
They are trying to sell prevention to people who don’t want it…instead of a cure for the sick people who really want the solution.
I’ll give you an example.
Last week I was in a cafe here in Dubai when two guys came to the door and wished to speak to the manager.
“We are here to offer you book keeping…. do you need corporate tax or other set up…?”
Now these two guys were in the 43 degree Celsius heat (nearly 110 degrees Fahrenheit) trying to convince the manager that he should drop his existing provider and trust these guys with the most intimate aspects of his business.
I felt bad for them because even if this manager needed such services.. it would not be with two guys desperate enough to stand in the sun on a hot August Dubai day.
And so they left to try the next one.
Selling cures to healthy people is frustrating beyond words.
Instead, find your audience and what they truly desire…and then create the solution and talk about it in the language that resonates with them.
