“How many people are registered for the event?”

Before every Bx meeting I often get asked this question.

And you can imagine the confusion when I reply that I hope we don’t get more than 20 people and ideally – I would prefer 12-16.

Why?

So we get to know each other and our businesses more intimately and make it easier to remember each other and make relevant introductions.

But as I said many get confused because they equate quantity with success.

A networking event with 100 people is more valuable to attend than an event with 10.

This is utter nonsense, because it is the fit and quality of the people you meet in the room that is more crucial to success than how many are in the room.

I’ll give you an example.

One of our Bx members related his experience at another business networking event he attended with his wife at a popular nightspot.

“So we arrived at the bar and there were about 300 people.. mostly men.. maybe 4 women in total there. My wife and I split up to each side of the room.  In a few minutes my wife came back to me and said we’re leaving…

Because when she was on the other side a guy came up to her and asked if she was alone.

When she told him she had arrived with her husband he then asked if they had an open relationship.  On finding she was not in an open relationship he then proceeded to ask if she had any sisters who were more open..  and so she stopped the conversation and left and grabbed me to go.  It was a complete waste of time.”

It’s the same fallacy many businesses make when it comes to refusing to niche down.

But I’ll miss out on all these customers…”

And they end up trying to be something to everyone and end up being nothing to anyone.

Quality trumps quantity every time.
