David’s heart raced as Nathan’s words echoed in his head: “You’re being robbed.”
“What the hell do you mean? Who’s robbing me?” David spat, his lips already stinging from the pressure he had bitten into them.
Nathan gave a faint smile and leaned back. “You’ll find out. But first, let me ask you something. How’s Finance doing?”
“Finance? Is it Jack?!” David shot up in his seat, fists tightening. “I swear if he’s screwing me, he’s out. But no—he wouldn’t. I stood by him when that pain-in-the-ass consultant wanted him gone. I vouched for his loyalty.”
Nathan shook his head slowly. “It’s not Jack.”
David snorted. “Still, the guy can’t get me a clean P&L to save his life. His ‘unique Excel sheet’ is a joke. But stealing? No way.”
“David,” Nathan said with a calm, deadly seriousness, “you’re missing the point. What’s your financial data telling you?”
“I check the bank balance every week. Profits are steady. Auditors signed off on everything.”
Nathan shook his head again. “What about cash flow? ROI? Customer acquisition metrics?”
David felt his face flush. “I… I don’t monitor that regularly. Why are you dragging this out? If it’s not Jack, then who?!”
Nathan raised an eyebrow, letting the silence hang in the air.
“You’re focused on symptoms, not the disease,” Nathan said softly.
David slammed the table. “Stop with the riddles, Nathan. Just tell me!”
But Nathan didn’t bite. He just stared, calm as ever, while David’s mind spun with suspicion and frustration.
