We took my daughters to the community Halloween party yesterday.
In the gaming section was a station where you threw a Velcro ball against a well of pumpkins set up as targets which you had to hit to win.
My 4 year old took the ball wound up her arm and threw a strike.
The ball actually split the target in two and caused it to fold over itself on the top of the ball that stuck to the wall.
She won…
But she actually didn’t…
The woman said she needed to hit 3 targets to win.
Which is BS.. and I called her on it…. but she insisted
So my 4 year old learned the lesson that life isn’t fair and you don’t always get the reward you deserve and should get.
Like the 7 out of 10 business owners who sacrificed years, often peace in their family, and took on risks and hardships only to end up not being able to sell the business and stuck with working even more years on it or just letting it go for nothing.
My wife and I talked about the woman running the event.
She was like a robot.
Didn’t care… no warmth… no discretion.
Not to excuse her but I said to my wife.. she is behaving exactly like someone not well treated and so doesn’t care about the customer experience.
It happens more than you think and it’s a big factor in whether an owner can step back and focus their time on more important matters.
Or have to jump in personally and give a reward to a 4 year old who threw a ball on a wall because the employee didn’t care to do the right thing.
Here’s an ironic postscript. 5 minutes after my daughter hit the target and was refused their management put up a sign that you only had to hit the target once to win.
The employee still refused.
How well is your team representing you.
Will they empower you to step back and take your business to new heights?
Or are you stuck in the day to day because you cannot put them in front of your customers as they will just screw it up.
It’s another area we tackle in our Q4 lab and upcoming learning group activity.
