I watched an NFL game live for the first time in decades on my birthday this past Sunday.
It featured my hometown NFL team the Chicago Bears playing in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And surprisingly, despite the annoying and frequent commercial breaks, it was enjoyable to watch the strategies of both teams play out in front of me.
Because when you understand this game, you also understand you are seeing a live version of Chess.
More violent, more spontaneous, but ultimately strategic and very measurable.
As I was watching I kept thinking about the business and all of you.
Because every player in this field would have stepped out there only after being prepared with statistics and measured KPIs.
They would know which plays to run and when they would “audible” (change the play last minute) based on what the other side was presenting them.
At this level, you can’t just go with your gut.
And you can’t win by trying to do it all yourself.
That is why I thought of many of you.
Because many of you go on the field with a playbook that lacks key pages and plays.
In the NFL, if I try to run the ball and the defense has 8 guys stacked up at the line of scrimmage… Then most likely my runner will be killed on the spot.
On the other hand… if I fake a play to the runner convincingly… and all the defenders run to the guy without the ball… then I can just step back and toss the ball down the field… and my receiver will probably catch it wide open and score, beating the defense.
But in business, many of us continue to try to run the ball into the face of an 8-man defensive front, because running the ball has brought us to where we are today.
And the results are predictable…. And painful…
And it doesn’t have to be that way.
