His bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, the holes in the wall, and the mound of garbage in the middle of the living room are my most vivid childhood memories of my family as landlords.
We owned a building with two 3 bedroom flats on separate floors.
My mother didn’t want to spend the money for a management company so she did it herself.
And to say the least.. in the 1980s.. we got stuck with people like this.
This drunkard hadn’t paid rent in months and it took weeks to finally evict him.
And he left much more in damage than his security deposit could cover or the money he did give us.
So when I was asked if I ever wanted to own properties for rent I said emphatically no.
The idea of passive income and freedom was foreign to me.
Renting properties meant drunks, trash, and stress.
Until I grew up and saw it differently.
But for many children of business owners the company that paid the bills to feed them was something with which they wanted nothing to do.
The empty seats next to the other childrens’ parents.
The promises to do something next week as today was bad “due to work.”
It sucked.
Every day.
So why own that?
Why would anyone?
If you own a business ask yourself.
“Is this something someone would want to own and grow…. Or is it a foxhole to crawl into and best to leave behind?”
If you own a foxhole we can help you change that.
