My first concert I ever went to was back in 1986 or 87.
Boston of all bands.
And we went to see them in Wisconsin after a weekend of heavy rainfall (not much unlike the one that just pummeled us in Dubai).
The concert was fantastic but as we went to go home we had a problem.
Many of the cars, including ours, were spinning our wheels but not escaping the mud that was gripping us more and more.
We stopped reving the engine, popped the trunk (boot in the UK), and luckily a snow shovel to dig cars out of the snow was there.
We dug ourselves out and 90 minutes or later we were able to find dry ground.
So what does that have to do with business?
Well. Many of you are stuck in the mud of commoditisation.
You haven’t differentiated yourselves effectively or you’ve let yourselves be defined and placed as a commodity and you know how that feels.
“You charge how much? Well the other company I called is 25% lower.. will you beat it?”
And you know you can’t afford to do it.. but desperation for that client wins over and you give 30%
And promise yourself it’s a one off and he will come back next time and buy at full price… repeatedly.
Except it never happens like that.. does it?
More likely, they complain about the result or something else and demand further discounts and soon you’re moving their building to the right because they don’t like the sun in the morning.
And the wheels keep spinning…
