“Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.”
My favourite line from my least favourite Godfather movie.
And I hear it every time I sit across from a frustrated business owner who tried to do the right thing.
They tried to raise prices.
Tried to step back.
Tried to stop chasing every deal.
Tried to build something that didn’t need them glued to it every day.
And for a moment… it worked.
Then cash flow tightened.
A big client waved money.
A staff issue popped up.
The Devil on their shoulder whispering “just this once.”
And boom.
They’re right back in the chair.
Hustling…selling…fixing…apologising
And God Forbid…discounting to the Zombie horde.
Michael Corleone didn’t want the life.
He wanted out.
He wanted normal.
But every compromise pulled him deeper.
Every “temporary” decision became permanent.
Until there was no exit left.
Business works the same way.
You don’t lose control all at once.
You trade it away one small decision at a time.
You take the wrong client because the money looks good.
You discount because you smoke the crack pipe of volume will make up for it.
You keep processes loose because it’s faster if you just handle it.
You stay indispensable because it feels safer… (and it’s good to be needed).
Slowly your business stops being something you own.
And relentlessly becomes something that takes your control and owns you.
I hear it across different stories but I always see the same trap.
Short term relief becomes long term captivity.
It’s not like most owners has their business….they are just exhausted by it.
They’re proud of what they built.
But they can’t leave it.
They can’t slow it down.
They can’t sell it.
They can’t trust it to run without them.
So every time they try to step out…
The business pulls them back in.
That’s why I keep coming back to the same point.
Freedom in business isn’t about hustle.
It’s about leverage.
It’s about building something that holds together when you are not there.
Something that keeps its value when you say no.
Something that gets stronger instead of shakier when pressure hits.
A business worth buying is one that is worth owning.
And sure as hell a lot of fun and joy to run.
That is the purpose behind Fall in Love with Your Business Again.

Michael didn’t end up loving his life.
He died alone with a dog at his side.
If only he had a business he loved…
