Remember Kodak? They pretty much had the photography game in their pocket, then digital came along, and ….. they’re history.
Not because they didn’t see it coming, but because they chose to ignore it. A classic case of sticking your head in the sand and hoping for the best.
It’s a cliché we can’t afford to ignore. Stay open to new ideas? Blah blah we know but what does it mean in real life practical terms.
Do we chase very shiny object or go down every rabbit hole?
Not really.
The practical thing you can do today and every day is to constantly fine tune your business as if you were going to sell it tomorrow.
How does that help?
By trying to make your business irresistible to future investors it forces you to open your mind and spot the opportunities that give your business an extra kick and more importantly safeguard you from the risks that can sink you.
Here is the dirty secret.
You will exit your business one day – voluntary or involuntary.
And every decision you make will bring you further down one path or the other. You are either taking cash out of your pocket and burning it for a night light or you are growing cash in the garden that you can harvest both today and tomorrow.
Here’s an example
We had a perfume manufacturer strike gold in a mastermind by borrowing a page from the playbook of a fellow member in the mastermind – a carpet cleaner.
Specifically, he took direct mail campaign tips from a business nothing like his own and ended up boosting his revenue and profits by 5x in just two years.
Talk about thinking outside the box!
So, what’s the moral of the story? Keeping an eye on the long game and being ready to adapt is key. This perfume guy wasn’t just open to new ideas; he actively looked to build the equity in his business by asking questions and seeking out new ideas, even from the most unexpected places.
It’s a cliché but it’s reality. The next big idea might just come from the least expected source.
Let’s stay curious, stay open, and keep learning from each other.
Which is the heart of what we offer in our masterminds and different solutions through Sophiall.
