Colin took the family to Crete in June.

By Wednesday he’d taken fourteen calls.

Not one of them was a crisis.

One was the wifi password for the meeting room. One was whether the Hendersons get ten per cent or their usual eight. One was where the spare key to the parts cabinet lives, and Colin knew instantly, because he put it there in 2019.

He took that one standing waist-deep in the pool with the phone held over his head, while his youngest waited for him to watch her jump in.

He got home and called me to tell me about his holiday and threw in how his business would fall apart without him.

He was half proud when he told me.  In fact, most owners are.

So I asked him to go back through the fourteen.

Not one of them needed his judgement. Every one was a system that doesn’t exist. A password nobody wrote down. A discount rule nobody agreed.

That isn’t a staff problem. His people aren’t lazy and they’re not stupid. They rang him because there was nothing else to ring.

There were way better ways to spend him time on Crete I told him.

Away from the phone.

Well that’s what Module 3 about End Burnout Fall in Love with your Business is all about, and it lands on the 18th.
