My friend was distraught.
Her 92 year old father who was suffering from Alzheimers had been hospitalised after neighbours were complaining of his yelling and shouting.
He was upset that his 90 year old paralyzed wife was having a torrid affair with the local baker from the neighbourhood’s grandson (who had moved away decades before).
His delusion and paranoia had become his reality.
And there was no reasoning or logical arguments that could be made to sway him – so the tragedy of both the mental decline and his abuse of his paralyzed spouse would continue.
And it got me thinking..
The delusions I have had in my career and my business that cost me millions.
That a toxic environment would miraculously change so best I leave the opportunity to go elsewhere – it didn’t.
That a written guarantee from an untrustworthy person is worth the paper it’s signed on – it isn’t.
That giving away tons of free information and meeting for nearly 10 hours would get the Medical Recruitment Consultants to sign on – it didn’t.
That the customer is always right – they aren’t although they are still the customer.
So yes there are many delusions that hinder us or waste our time and money.
And then I thought about how I got rid of these and other delusions – some without the pain of loss.
And it was meeting and talking to fellow business owners who shared their insights and lessons from their own journeys.
The exponential wisdom that comes from more than one person in a room freely sharing and not wanting anything in return.
Ultimately an education that was much more than I would have received otherwise – and more practical than even my University of Chicago MBA.
And so get out there.. meet with others and ensure you don’t suffer the usual entrepreneurial delusions that cost so much time and money.
