On dog owner chats … on adverts.. I see over and over again..

“Fur Baby”

“Buy your fur baby this.. buy your fur baby that…”

“Here are pictures of me and my fur baby.”

“My fur baby changed the channels on the TV.. how cute…”

“My fur baby had a bowel movement to the soundtrack of Prince.. how adorable..”

You get the idea…

But here’s the thing …

Does calling your pet a “fur baby”, in other words, humanising it…. actually make sense?

I don’t know about you but I’m glad we live in a world where we don’t have to castrate or “spay” a baby for them to get into school..

Or put them down when they are sick or become a public nuisance.

For fur babies though… that is their reality…

So fur babies is a cute concept but ultimately very manipulative marketing. And for those people who take it too much to heart… extremely painful when reality catches up and they have to face that tough ultimate decision.

Which I don’t have to spell out here.

So why do I bring this all up?

Because pet owners are not alone in being victims of this type of alternate reality manipulation.

As business owners, you are often targeted by scams and marketing hacks designed to hook you emotionally, while cleverly lifting your wallets and sending you to pursue alternative realities that have no basis or practicality for your life and circumstances.

Think of your own experiences.

Have you ever regretted an investment after the fact? Not because it didn’t work out, but because you realised it was never a good fit for you in the first place.

I do.

I remember buying into a “90 day” program that marketed itself as “exclusive” and “tough to be accepted”. When I attended the first group consulting call, I realised immediately that the only exclusivity though was for suckers like me who fell for the pitch. There were people there who had no viable business, had little chance of success, and who should not have had their money taken.

So protect yourselves.

If it’s too good to be true.. it probably is…

If the promise is some sort of magic wand… close the page or hang up the phone.

As a business owner who has built and established a business, you deserve respect. So anyone trying to sell you something should be clear and their solution should make sense to you. If it doesn’t than find one that does.

At the end of the day, a dog is a dog, a duck is a duck,

and a fur baby is a fantasy – often an expensive one.

In both the home and business.

To your Success and Sanity,

George
