“You find out life’s this game of inches. So is football because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half second, too slow, too fast, you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They’re in every break of the game, every minute, every second……
Because we know when we add up all those inches, that’s gonna make the F***** difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying! I’ll tell you this, in any fight it’s the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. And I know, if I’m gonna have any life anymore it’s because I’m still willing to fight and die for that inch.”
– Tony D’Amoto (Al Pacino) Any Given Sunday…

If you played American Football you know the truth of what Al Pacino said in the movie Any Given Sunday.

It’s been 35 years since I put on the pads, but I still have dreams in my sleep of putting them on again and smelling the freshly mowed grass, hearing the buzz of the crowd, tasting the rubber of the mouth guard and looking in the eyes of my opponents – is that fear or an upset stomach on their faces?

The first time I lined up at the line of scrimmage what struck me was how short the distances really are.

The opposing QB was closer than the barrista who takes your morning coffee.

Logically, you think getting 10 yards or more is easy. It’s right there…

Getting a few inches? Heck.. just fall forward…

And then the ball snaps and reality teaches you quickly….. nothing is easy..

And you’re fighting…

And you realise and learn quickly that the one ending up on his back isn’t always the weakest or smallest…

Often it’s the one who likes shortcuts, with the bad footwork, the bad blocking technique, who ends up being pushed away, stepped on, and mercifully removed by his coach before he kills himself or whomever he is trying to protect.

If you have a mobile phone, take a look at it. How long is it? How many cm or inches long do you think it is?

Now imagine you were offered $1 million to jump a certain distance and you fell short.. by exactly the length of that phone.

Would you get the reward prorated?

Nope..

You’d get nothing. Not even the prize for participating (apologies to the kids growing up who will be confused when they find this out later in life).

This week we’ll talk about inches and business.

It’s there all around us.

And it’s the difference between owning a business that changes your life.. or wastes it.

Thinking About Selling Your Business

We know you’ve worked hard on your business. What if we told you there’s a way to make it even better, and position it to sell one day at the top price? With Socratic Scaling, we can show you how.

In as little as six months, we can help your business stand out, scale up, and become something others would have to pay top money to buy.

The best part is these benefits start today. Even if you don’t want to sell, your business will put more money in your pocket, free your time, and be more enjoyable to run.

But you need to start getting ready now. Don’t be like the 7 out of 10 business owners who put it off until tomorrow and then find out they’re stuck with profitable businesses that no investor wants to buy, or child wants to inherit.
