Another tale from my trips to Greece.
There’s a legendary souvlaki shop in the village — the kind of place with loyal regulars, packed tables, and word-of-mouth that stretches for miles.
Except now… it’s shut down.
No “on vacation” sign.
No reopening notice.
Just silence and an empty patio.
Tourists still come, walk up, and shake their heads. Then they wander off to the competitor down the street.
So what happened?
The food was excellent.
The numbers were strong.
No government red tape.
No bad reviews.
No business crisis.
The owner just went in for a routine medical procedure…and something went wrong.
Now he’s bedridden.
And the business?
Completely frozen.
No second-in-command. No ops team to hold the fort. No systems to keep it running without him.
What’s worse — if it sells at all, it’ll be for pennies on the euro.
This is the harsh truth no one wants to admit:
If your business can’t run — or even survive — without you, then you don’t own a business.
You own a job.
And when life punches you in the face — or simply puts you in a hospital bed — that job vanishes.
Poof.
Gone.
Decades of work and sacrifice reduced to a boarded-up window and a for-sale sign no one wants to answer.
A new legacy of your family struggling because what you built disappeared.
You think it can’t happen to you?
Think again.
