I kicked off with an example of a web developer struggling against low-cost competitors using cheap 3rd world labour and how he was stressed about keeping a roof over his head when surrounded by $50 websites.
Then I mentioned Vance Morris who owns a carpet cleaning company in a commoditised industry and yet is able to charge 3x his competitors and have a long line of customers wanting to buy from him.
This set the stage for discussing how businesses often lose their unique edge and become commodities while others thrive by providing superior experiences.
And to provide a superior experience you need to understand what drives your market and how they relate to you – and how you get the word to them.
Key insights included:
- Understanding Dominant Desires: Learn how to identify what truly drives your customers and use this knowledge to create compelling value propositions.
- Leveraging Mass Desires: See how successful brands like Apple and Nike tap into collective desires to connect deeply with their audience.
- Practical Exercises: I brought in methods and tools developed by Brian Kurtz and Chris Mason at Titans Accelerator like the “So I Can” and “what will they not tell you” worksheets to help you dive deeper into your customers’ desires and motivations.
We finished with a breakout session where we applied these concepts to our own businesses, and as a bonus our participants (who were calling in from the USA, UK and Dubai) were able to connect and schedule future collaboration between themselves.
