My parents were friends with “Uncle Ted” and his family, whose kids were the same age as my siblings so we hung out a lot.
Ted was a success story in the United States.
As an immigrant he worked hard, started his own business and became a successful manufacturer of industrial supply parts.
As a spoiled brat who tended to cry to get what I wanted, Ted scared me because he called me out on my sh*t.
And I had to listen to him.
But as I grew up and became a man, I began to see Ted as a trusted advisor and mentor.
Eventually, I moved across the world, but we kept in touch, especially during trips to Greece.
When it was time for Ted to retire, he had a profitable 7 figure business but he couldn’t find a buyer at the price he wanted.
So he ended up passing the business down to his sons.
And they proceeded to downsize the company into a 6-figure business and to sell it at a discount.
Ted’s legacy pretty much went up in smoke and for pennies on the dollar.
Unfortunately, I did not have Sophiall and its tools at my disposal at the time, otherwise I could have returned the favour and mentored him on how to prepare and extract the maximum value from the business.
Ted has since passed away.. but I still think about him and what could have been…
