Caroline was pacing in the conference room … and beside herself.
Her customer Sarah who demanded this meeting last night at 10 pm on short notice hadn’t arrived yet.
Caroline had to frantically than make arrangements for dropping off her children at school because she had to leave early and go on the opposite side of the city.. fighting the traffic that was all going in the same direction of the area where Sarah’s offices were.
Sarah has been a customer for three years and every year she would strong-arm Caroline into margin killing discounts.
And it didn’t stop there.
Sarah seemed to have a knack for sending those passive aggressive messages at the precise moment Caroline had finally switched off work and was spending time with her family.
When her plane landed on holiday… or in the middle of her child’s birthday party.
Every message made Caroline’s palms sweat and her heart race.
In fact, she would take a sharp breath when the phone indicator said Caroline was calling or sending a Whats app.
20 minutes and still no Sarah and no messages.
30 minutes…
40 minutes….
Caroline messaged her prospect she was supposed to see at 10 am. Told him that she would most likely be late and apologised.
The prospect replied 10 am was the only time he was available and so if she couldn’t make it they would have to cancel.
A meeting that Caroline had spent weeks trying to arrange.
Susan arrived at the office .. acknowledged Caroline in the conference room and then proceeded to the coffee station and a spirited discusson with two other women as they shared the donuts someone brought in.
60 minutes…
This was par for the course with Susan.
She has been Caroline’s biggest customer and she made sure to let Caroline know it.
Caroline looked at the sweat glistening on her palms…
And made her decision.
