I was watching Manhunt tonight on Netflix with a documentary on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.
In 2001, Osama Bin Laden was pinned in a mountain valley with 1,000 men.
The CIA had eyes on him. U.S. Army Rangers and Special Forces were nearby, ready to move in and finish the job.
All they needed was the green light.
But Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said no.
“This is a CIA operation,” he said.
Not his turf. Not his problem.
And just like that — the mission collapsed under the weight of bureaucracy and ego.
Bin Laden slipped away.
Thousands of lives. Years of war. Trillions in cost. All because someone prioritised politics over the mission.
Forget victory..
Forget giving closure to the thousands who lost friends and family members just less than 90 day before.
Bureaucracy and turf were more important…
Now they say Rumsfeld was a brilliant man.
Personally I think he was a complete moron who was brilliant in convincing others how smart he was
But this Jackass has a lesson to teach all of us ..
Prioritising Style over substance is insane.
But business owners do this all the time.
They box in good people with rigid roles or barriers.
They don’t let capable people do the leading.
They let turf and titles override execution.
Sure it’s a cliché but the underlying truth is that before delegating you need to identify the right people who know how to be leaders and to act on the greater good.
It’s about cloning yourself with the right people – those willing to give their all to implement your mission.. your ethos… and to fulfill why you built your business in the first place.
My friend who I told you about before has done this to the tune of growing an 8 figure business while he simultaneously makes ample time to travel and pursue his hobbies.
How not to Rumsfeld yourself will be something I talk about in the next few days….
Stay tuned for details.
