When I played my last season of organised American football, the head coach made a big decision:
No two-way players.
No one would play both offense and defense.
Why?
The year before, too many got injured — and he wanted to avoid that catastrophe.
But the problem was that we didn’t have the talent or size for that luxury.
Our “big guys” were on the offensive line.
Our defensive line?
We had a 5-foot nose tackle hobbit weighing 55 kg (121 lbs).
We got stomped.
One win the whole season — and that was against a team that didn’t win a single game.
So… what’s the business lesson?
We often blind ourselves to the reality in front of us.
We make well-meaning decisions that ignore the truth of where we stand.
And by the time we face the consequences, we’ve wasted months — sometimes years — we can’t get back.
That’s when desperation sets in.
Grinding overtime just to keep the lights on.
Working harder for less.
