“I don’t want to sell my business,” the owner told me.
“Good,” I said.
“Because you probably couldn’t—even if you wanted to.”
That hit comes straight from an excellent Linkedin post by Mike Finger out of Minneapolis–St. Paul.
I’m paraphrasing here the quote and below the message he sent out that deserves a special spotlight (with some additions on my part).
Why?
Because many 6 and even 7 figure business owners are trapped.
They don’t own a business.
They own a job in a box.
And when the day comes to exit… they end up realising that the market doesn’t care what they want.
Some 70-80% of businesses will never sell.
Not because they’re bad – in fact, many are acutally profitable.
But because they suffer from one or more or all of the following:
- Built to depend on the owner.
- Do not stand out as an opportunity worth investing
- Amateur hour financial reporting
- Too risky in relation to the reward
- Unclear and confusing what an investor might be walking into..
- And more…
So when someone says:
“I don’t want to sell right now.”
That statement often masks a deeper truth:
“I can’t sell right now… and I don’t want to face it.”
This one hit deep.
