This morning, after breakfast with my family, I came home alone. My wife and daughters had gone to the Ladies Club for a swim, leaving me to a very different welcome.
As soon as I opened the door, our little white bichon-poodle—11 years old but still full of energy—practically somersaulted with excitement. She grabbed her favorite toy, dashed back and forth, and demanded I chase her around like she was still a puppy.
Her enthusiastic “welcome” went on for five full minutes before she finally dropped her toy and went back to her preferred pastime: sleeping.
A couple of hours later, I stepped out for… one minute.
When I came back, she gave me the same five-minute, over-the-top welcome. It didn’t matter that I was only gone for a moment—her reaction was identical to when I’d been gone all morning.
You see, dogs can’t tell time. To them, short time or long time—it’s all the same. The only thing that mattered to her was that I had been gone.
From my point of view, though? That same “madness” became less cute and more annoying the second time around, especially since I’d only been gone for 60 seconds.
And that brings me to today’s lesson:
In business, being “the same” every time isn’t charming. It’s deadly.
If your customers or partners see you as just “more of the same,” it’s the kiss of death for capturing real value—whether you’re selling your business or just trying to build a company that runs smoothly without you.
Clichés and platitudes won’t get you anywhere.
What will? A real, actionable plan.
