It’s election day in the United States and I’m thinking about the reason behind Sophiall.

Why?

Because another election was the main event of my first days in Dubai.

That’s when I moved here for a new job – the Tuesday in 2008 when Obama was elected.

And I can still remember watching on our trading floor the huge crowds in Chicago celebrating his victory.

New people entered my life who ultimately had an outsized influence on me and why I eventually started Sophiall a dozen or so years later.

In the next few years, I learned how to succeed in a tough market by figuring out what my competitors really wanted and always delivering it.

How important is that you have the right customers in your business who want to do business with you repeatedly and tell others about you.

But I also learned the hard way that being a good employee and creating equity for the owner doesn’t guarantee anything.

In particular, one of my clients, whom I considered a best friend, arranged with my junior colleague behind my back to betray me and take over the desk and move me to another desk.

Damn it stung… the experience of building a profitable “business” that I was planning to run for years, scale up, invest the bonuses and then retire in my 50s….

Only to lose it…and find out…the valuable business I built was actually no more than a job which made me expendable.

So I lost my confidence.

And scared the hell out of my wife with angry cursing and shouting in my sleep, waking her up with a racing heart.

Let’s face it…I was naïve…

Thinking and behaving like an owner when ultimately, I was just an employee who ultimately had no say in the matter.

But that said, learning and experiencing it was invaluable.

Because it led me to launch Sophiall.

And my core principle that any business owner who made the sacrifices and worked hard to build a profitable business should ultimately be rewarded for it.

That they should not experience the cruelty of pouring their blood, sweat and tears into a company and finding out too late – it has little or no value outside their control.

Like 7 out of 10 business owners who are relying on selling their business but end up empty handed.

I’ll talk more about this over the next few days.

But this post is already too long.
